Cameras on foundation machine: An innovation in safety and efficiency
The collaboration between Van ‘t Hek and Rietveld has produced a revolutionary solution for foundation machines.
By installing a 360-degree camera system, the operator now has full visibility from his cab, leading to improved safety, efficiency and working conditions.
The drivers of innovation
John Middelkoop, an experienced crane operator at Van ‘t Hek, sought a way to improve his visibility around the foundation machine from the cab.
The main motives were to increase workplace safety and to perform his work more efficiently without constantly having to leave the cab.
With the approval of management, represented by Bart Buijs, head of equipment, the project was launched with the goal of achieving a safer and more productive work process.
Specific challenges
It is challenging to operate a machine of this size.
The cab already has a large blind spot on the right side and right front as standard.
This obstructs the operator’s direct view and can cause dangerous situations.
To solve this problem, an additional camera has been placed on a rotating lamp.
This allows the operator to always rotate the camera to the desired angle.
In addition, the superstructure can fully rotate relative to the undercarriage, changing the view of the tracks from the cab.
However, with the Omnivue 3D HD system, the tracks always remain visible through the bird view perspective.
This makes it easy to check that the vehicle stays on the bulkheads while driving, for example.
Rietveld’s role in development
Rietveld, known for its custom solutions, was approached for this project.
Frank Kanters, a camera system specialist, worked closely with John to optimally position the camera system on the foundation machine.
This gave the operator a full view and birdview from the cab, which significantly improved operations.
Benefits of the camera system
- Increased safety: The camera system helps prevent accidents and damage by providing a full view around the machine.
- Improved efficiency: The operator can detect obstacles and people around the machine without leaving the cab, saving time and increasing efficiency.
- Occupational health and safety improvements: Less physical strain for the operator due to reduced entry and exit, contributing to better working conditions and job satisfaction.
Next steps for Gebr.
Van ‘t Hek
Bart Buijs emphasizes the importance of this project for the future of Van ‘t Hek.
After a successful implementation and the positive results, the plan is to give a presentation on the business case and then make an inventory of other machines that can be equipped with this safety solution.
This underlines Van ‘t Hek’s commitment to safety and sustainable employment.
