The logistics sector is changing rapidly. The government is strongly committed to a competitive and sustainable sector, in which trucks run fuller, routes are planned more intelligently and resources are used optimally. This will not only reduce CO₂ emissions, but also improve traffic safety, the quality of life and margins for entrepreneurs.
To accelerate this transition, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management (IenW) supports companies with the Measuring and Improving CO₂ Emissions program. This program is partly funded from the proceeds of the truck levy – the so-called Backstop – and was created in cooperation with Evofenedex, TLN and VERN. The goal: to structurally reduce CO₂ emissions and mileage within road transport.
Program with clear pillars
Measuring and Improving CO₂ Emissions focuses on three main components:
- Provide deep insight into logistics operations for as many companies as possible.
- Transfer knowledge and experience so that improvements have lasting effect.
- Scaling up a proven carbon-footprinting methodology, with special attention to load and empty mileage.
The program is also in line with new European legislation, such as mandatory CSRD reporting and the voluntary VSME Directive. In doing so, the Carbon Footprinting method and the Load Performance Indicator give companies a grip on both CO₂ emissions and vehicle utilization.
For whom is the program intended?
All road transportation companies can participate:
- self-drivers,
- small and medium-sized carriers,
- large transportation companies,
- retailers and shippers (in cooperation with their carriers).
Each participant receives personalized guidance, with additional focus on organizations with fewer than 50 heavy vehicles (N2 and N3).

Rietveld actively contributes to standardization
Within this national movement, standardization of reliable CO₂ reporting plays an important role. Rietveld participated in the working group focusing on uniform data standards for CO₂ reporting within the sector. Thanks to this commitment, our solutions EasyTrack and EasyDrive fully meet the set requirements for accurate, uniform and future-proof CO₂ registration.
Companies that participate in Measuring and Improving CO₂ emissions can use this data directly within their reports and improvement plans.
Together toward more efficient, safe and sustainable transportation
With our telematics solutions and expertise in vehicle management and safety, Rietveld helps organizations every day to operate smarter, safer and cleaner. By linking up closely with the national approach, we help companies take realistic and measurable steps towards sustainable logistics.
