From Monday, August 16, the Environmental and Transport Inspectorate (ILT) started digital inspections of the tachograph files of trucks and buses.
With this, the Inspectorate is taking the next step towards digital supervision.
Since last week, road transport companies can receive a request from the Inspectorate to submit their tachograph files digitally via a web form.
The ILT uses this to analyze the extent to which these companies comply with the rules for driving and rest periods in road transport.
Project leader Martijn Klaassen explains the advantages of this online system: ‘Efficiency and effectiveness are paramount, for us as ILT, but certainly also for the entrepreneurs. The companies can share their files with us quickly and simply, without the need for an inspector to visit them, which is often a time-consuming visit. After all, good compliance means fewer inspections. We can process the data faster and get a better understanding of compliance within the market.’
Feedback findings
‘The advantage is also that the companies themselves get quick insight into how they are doing when it comes to compliance with driving and rest periods.
They get our findings fed back to them and can act on them, if necessary,’ said Klaassen.

The ILT’s supervision focuses on fair and safe road transport.
The ILT structurally enforces the rules for driving and rest periods, among other things, with the aim of countering distortion of competition in the transport sector, ensuring the safety, health and welfare of drivers and the safety of other road users.
